The Path of Individual Effort

In Tantric tradition, the means (or paths) to liberation are called upāyas. Most people begin their spiritual journey in Āṇavopāya, the path of individual effort — and it is foundational.

When divine grace awakens in us a longing to know the highest truth about life, it leads us to a teacher and the practices of his/her lineage that help unfold and support our wish to grow spiritually. Coming to a teacher and a practice is our response to God’s grace.

Fundamental to āṇavopāya is the effort of learning to open our heart and keep it open, regardless of the mental and worldly difficulties we face. To do that we meditate, selflessly serve, and develop a disciplined inner practice that enables us to integrate our growing awareness in daily life. Throughout āṇavopāya, we work to let go of our need to control life, and we surrender the limited parts of us that keep us locked in our tensions and misunderstanding.

In our practice, learning to truly open our heart and tune in to the flow of energy in our central channel is central to our growth. Through our daily meditation and the śakti transmission we receive from the teacher, the powerful force of kuṇḍalinī is aroused in us, and that energy begins to burn through the blocks in our psychic system, freeing us from misunderstanding and limited consciousness.

When we first come to our spiritual practice, we experience only diversity — there’s me, there’s God, and there’s everything else in the world. We do the work of āṇavopāya to learn to look past that and search for an experience of being part of a divine whole. As we open and reach inside, we become aware of the joy and freedom that is inherent in knowing our unity with God.

In this retreat, Nathaji will help you more fully understand the benefits and challenges of spiritual practice. He will offer practical advice and teach powerful techniques that are part of āṇavopāya.
